THIS IS SPARTA!Edit

In the popular movie directed by Zack Snyder, 300, there is one memorable scene towards the beginning of the film which involves Leonidas dealing with a Persian messenger trying to convince him to give his kingdom over to Xerces. He replies with keeping him at bay of the pit of death with a sword. The lines go as following.

Persian "This is blasphemy. This is madness!"

Leonidas "Madness? THIS IS SPARTA!"

This scene is ended with Leonidas kicking the messenger into the pit and killing off several of the surrounding guards in a similar fashion with the help of other Spartans.

Not too long after it's origin, the internet took great wave from it. Though we do not know exactly how the fad started out being as big as it became, one of the prominent things that stood out from the attention has been the various amounts of Sparta remixes using the clip that started it.

As seen in the link above, many GIF images were made using the head of Leonidas' character that fit into other popular memes.

On another note, not only has the same background music that has became popular with the fad been used with these remixes but as well as others that copy the constant use of a few-worded phrase. Here is an example mixed with the "Over 9,000!" fad.

Rick RollEdit

This fad involved fads that don't actually turn out the way you think they are going to after clicking the page. Such as porn for example. Or a random Youtube video. The default picture of that video will have something completely different but upon clicking it a video of Rick Astley's song "Never Gonna Give You Up!" is played. That is where the "Rick" comes in.

The source of the fad originated from the site 4chan, as do many memes. It was at first called "duckrolling" in which people were deceptively tricked in the same way but it linked to a picture of a duck with wheels in various topics. After this they were supposed to take the link and post it in another thread themselves.

In 4chan's Video Game section, someone posted a link to the Rick Astley video that we all know while telling everyone else that the video was a new trailer for the GTA IV game. It brought much attention and irritated many GTA fans with it's irrelevance, but then other people who knew about it started using it elsewhere. This eventually replaced the duckroll and deemed it's own similar name. Hence the "Roll".

The fad has even made it's way to television news and other popular media. It stands as one of the most well-known fads around.

IMMA CHARGIN' MAH LAZER!!1Edit

This meme originated from 4chan as a parody to the Dragonball Z anime series character Cell. It featured him in blackface, commonly used to exaggerate African American faces in theatre during when segregation was still an issue, and had a blue beam blasting from his mouth. The blast is seen after he says the well-known phrase "IMMA CHARGIN' MAH LAZER!!1"

The fad grew very quickly, like many 4chan fads do, and became highly used on video sites like Youtube and had many gif images made after it.

The lack of Cell is used in many of these videos and pictures though. The only prominent feature is the face and laser with the infamous phrase. The only difference is the face being placed on other characters bodies in different fields of media. The fad also eventually donned the alternative name "Shoop Da Whoop".

This video created by DominicFear on Youtube made the fad even more popular and has gotten several views and some sequels.

Another interesting fact is that these videos also made a parody of Marvel's Dr. Octopus character called "Dr. Octogonapus", who yells out his name before doing the Shoop Da Whoop blast, a lot more popular and used.

Alternatively now, you will sometimes hear the phrase "IMMA FIRIN' MAH LAZER!!1" rather than the usual "CHARGIN'". Both are just about as equally used.

O RLY?Edit

The O RLY? fad originated at the 4chan messaging board as well. It is unknown who originally created the picture of the owl using this term but it was meant to interpret shock or disbelief in another post. Later was formed the YA RLY! owl picture as the response picture to it. Not too long after came the final owl picture installation using NO WAI! just to add on to the chain.

Even though these three images are used more often than any other O RLY? picture variations, there are still much more variety in images parodying them. Some use other owl pictures, some use LOLcats, others use the original O RLY? owl picture and edit something into it to add to the situation. Some good examples are as following.

The phrase "O RLY?" most probably originated from the forum Something Awful FYAD. Though the owl image first appeared at 4chan, it is in actuality a real owl that has been used in certain films. It's name was Jonathan and died while in captivity in the San Diego Zoo from pneumonia. He died on February 7, 2005.

The fad still lives on though yet has seemed to lose it's original popularity.

LolcatsEdit

Lolcats are an extremely huge internet fad that is still popular today. They feature edited images of cats, rarily any other animal, that use broken grammar that fit the picture for humor.

An example would be a picture of a cat inside the screen of a computer. The caption would say something like "i m in ur intenet cloging ur tubes". Below is the example for viewing.

Another interesting thing about the lolcats are their diverse cast of characters that actully made it to lone popularity. Some of these cats include Ceiling Cat, Monorail Cat, and Happy Cat.

Most of these images can be found at their own website with the slogan "I Can Has Cheezburger?" The phrase has also been used in a fairly good amount of lolcat images.

The very first time the term "lolcat" was recorded being used originated in 4chan. The first image of a lolcat with the text featuring the "I Can Has Cheezburger" phrase can be traced back to Something Awful though.

Other things that have spawned from the lolcat fad hve included the LOLCODE, LOLCat Bible Translation Project, and the Ceiling Cat and Basement Cat saga representing the God and Satan of the lolcat universe.

Youtube PoopEdit

A Youtube Poop is a type of remix video using other short video clips from various shows that are mashed together. They are then, as the name states, posted on Youtube. Their randomness and almost complete pointlessness gives them the "Poop" part of their name and it can be usd to entertiain, shock, or confuse the viewer. Most of the times they take certain words and make the characters in it sound like they are sayig something dirty. Most of the times a certain part can be constantly played over and over again.

Youtube Poop first started with the Youtube user SuperYoshi. He had recently got a new computer and was testing out his Windows Movie Maker options with a downloaded video of The Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon show called "Recycled Koopa". The main phrase use constantly in the video was "I'd say he's hot on our tail!" SuperYoshi used many of his effects and cut from many random scenes that were used many times. The fad was then later carried on.

Many of the first Youtube Poops did not even feature the name "Youtube Poop" and were simply random videos with obscure names. When it was eventually donned some time later, it was kept by fans and creators. The ironic thing about the modern Youtube Poops is that none of them ever featured the same video SuperYoshi had used and have instea dtaken likeliness to other videos, though a lot of them still incorporate Mario and Luigi.

Many fads became used by Youtube Poop makers. The most popular of them all are the CD-I game animated movie scenes from "The Legend of Zelda: The Faces of Evil", "The Legend of Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon", and "Hotel Mario". Most of the famous quotes are based off of these. Others famous videos that have contributed many scenes are from "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog", the US "Street Fighter" cartoon, "Arthur", and "Dr. Rabbit".

Many of the most famous phrases in Youtube Poop history that have been used thousands of times are as listed below:

The Youtube Poop series has also had much different variety in their video namings. These include:

• Ear Rape: Distorting the volume along with a mixed image for a long amount of time for no apparent reason. The effects used usually make the video look twisted and the volume extremely loud or low at random points.

• THIS VIDEO WILL BE FLAGGED: Editing a particular scene in a Youtube Poop fad to make them sound as if they are saying something or doing something dirty and repeating it over and over again.

• THIS VIDEO CONTAINS [Insert Name]: A head of a character is placed on the head of a picture of Robotnik from the Sonic animated series while a noise or phrase that character has said is repeated with up and down rhythms to the Gourmet Race music from the Kirby.

• [Insert Name] Sparta Remix: Rather than the usual Sparta remix, onlt the background music is still used while another phrase from a different show in the Youtube Poop series is played to match it.

• Flash Poops: Telling stories starring the most well-known characters used in You Tube Poops by using tools such as Macromedia Flash. Disliked and even not seen as Poop by people who are used to traditional Poop techniques.

• [Insert Name] Does [Insert Verb] While I Play Unfitting Music: A character does a certain action repeatedly while music that does not fit the scenario is played.

• THIS VIDEO IS BETTER THAN [Insert Name]: A short clip, either something that's silly when taken out of context, absurdly trivial, or a super-short Youtube Poop, combined with a title that promises that the video is better than something else. (a popular video game, movie, or another fad)

• Filler Poops: Really short videos that made very quickly with the Youtube Poop cast of characters. Surprisingly, these are considered by most Youtube Poop fans to be the funniest Youtube Poops out there.

Flying Spaghetti MonsterEdit

The Flying Spaghetti Monster is the focus of the parody religion known as "The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster". The creature was created in 2005 by Bobby Henderson as a form of protest to the Kansas State Board of Education's decision to require the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to biological evolution in public schools. Since the intelligent design movement used ambiguous references to an unspecified "Intelligent Designer" to avoid court rulings prohibiting the teaching of creationism as a science, this presumably left open the possibility that any imaginable thing could fill that role.

Sent in an open letter to educational board, Henderson writes as if to actually believe in a supernatural creature from a religious standpoint that resembles a mix of spaghetti noodles and two meatballs with eyes floating. He also called for the "Pastafarian" theory of creation to be taught in their science classrooms.

It gained media attention fast and exposure lead to it being commonly used by Atheists and Agnostics. True followers call themselves "spagnostics".

Henderson stated in a later interview, "I don't have a problem with religion. What I have a problem with is religion posing as science. If there is a god and he's intelligent, then I would guess he has a sense of humor."

The Flying Spaghetti Monster has been used numerous times since then and actually has full books written and published on it. The basis of the religion focuses on the book, as their version of the 10 Commandments, "The Eight I'd Really Rather You Didn'ts."

It has appeared a few times on The Colbert Report and is commonly referred to in the Something Awful forums and Uncyclopedia.com.

NEDMEdit

The acronym that is the name of the fad stands for Not Even Doom Music. The fads became big elsewhere after originally becoming a top fad of the site YTMND. It has received many good responses, but just as equal negative ones. The sites depict animal cruelty towards cats and usually uses fake imagery of a specific LOLcat commonly referred to as "Happy Cat" or chapstick. What's also common in many of NEDM's fads is the letters N.E.D.M spoken by a text-to-speech program before a clip of music from Coburn's "We Interrupt This Programme (Jean Claude Ades remix)".

The fad started when a YTMND user posted a link to a video of a man setting a cat on fire in the YTMND user forums. It brought much attention but was eventually deleted and also struck a nerve with most users. After the kid who put the video up was arrested after turning himself in, all possible links to the cat burning were closed down. The YTMND sites linking to the footage was also deleted, however, almost all of them were strangely given 5 stars.

A certain user then began to downvote on all of the sites created by the people who voted 5 on the cat burning video in return. This made many of them irritated with him. One of which was a user named Spotz. He told the downvoting user, Titanium-Gecko, that he only upvoted the site only for the "irony of using the Doom bunny music".

Titanium-Gecko left a legendary message on one of Spotz' test sites not too long after informing "Okay Spotz. Since you do not "condone" burning kitten your sites have been 3'D until further notice. Still... nothing justifies 5'ing burning kittens. Not even Doom music."

Noticed by the browsing user moheevi who was inspired by the last portion of the comment, he began posting "NEDM" on many YTMND sites. He later created the first official NEDM site with a man holding a cat saying "It'll be ok kitty. It's not doom music. Want chapstick?" as a response to the music that was playing which is explained in the first paragraph of this article. The cat uses thought bubbles that say "NEDM" and "chapstick! rar ra ra ra r a ra ra r! meow. ruff. meows. ruffs. chaps tick. NEDM. NEDM." The link can be seen below.

Highlights and Happy Cat's face were later updates to the original site.

Many following sites also used the acronym but without explanation as to what the letters meant. The origin was so thorough that it took a YTMND investigation squad to collect all of the data. Happy Cat appeared not that long after in almost all NEDM sites.

Even though at first all of the NEDM sites leaned more towards the cat cruelty joke, later the cropped head of the Happy Cat was used and portrayed it getting revenge on humans for their animal cruelty. One link to a well-known YTMND like this is below.

The NEDM fad made it's way to some Youtube videos and became a reoccurring subject on many other forum sites. It even got it's own official site though there is nothing actually on it other than many swirling faces of the Happy Cat in a colorful background with the famous sound loop playing and the letters NEDM photoshoped to look like the design from the DOOM games logo. KHAN!!!Edit

This fad's origins are easy to trace for any Star Trek fan. It originated in the sequel film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of KHAN". The original scene goes with the dialogue as follows.

Kirk: "Khan, you bloodsucker. You're gonna have to do your own dirty work now, do you hear me? DO YOU?"

Khan: "Kirk...Kirk, you're still alive, my old friend."

Kirk: "Still, old, friend. You've managed to kill just about everyone else, but, like a poor marksman, you keep missing the target."

Khan: "Perhaps I no longer need to try, Admiral."

Kirk: "Khan... Khan, you've got Genesis, but you don't have me. You were going to kill me, Khan. You're gonna have to come down here. You're gonna HAVE TO COME DOWN HERE."

Khan: "I've done far worse than kill you, Admiral. I've hurt you. And I wish to go on hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her: marooned for all eternity in the center of a dead planet, buried alive. Buried alive"

It first became popular on YTMND and is actually the site's first major fad itself. It even has it's own universe always labeled KHANTMND followed by the webpage. The fad eventually became a lot bigger than just a YTMND fad and grew to be recognizable on some forums and posted in many Youtube videos. Here is the original YTMND.

The fad also bumped the Star Trek series up in popularity with it's newfound familiarity and diversity on the internet. YTMND still makes many KHAN! sites today parodying the short scene.

The fad can also be referred to as simply "AYB" standing for "All your base". It is a broken English phrase that made it's way across the internet fast and a well-known of internet meme. It was at it's internet biggest in 2001 to 2002. Many flash animations depicted the slogan.

The phrase originally comes from the European Sega Man Drive system game called Zero Wing. It was originally a Japanese video game, and later was translated into an English version in a very poor manner. It was obviously done by someone that had very poor grammar skills or who simply used a translator because they did not know English.

The GIF on the right shows the opening scene of the game that depicts the phrase near the end. The fad was popularized by the Something Awful forums who first brought it to light.

A more literal translation could go as such:

AD 2101―

War has begun.

Captain: What was that?

Engineer: Someone has planted a bomb in the ship!

Communication operator: Captain! Receiving transmission!

Captain: What?!

Communication operator: Visual incoming on the main screen.

Captain: Y...You!

CATS: You look busy, gentlemen.

The phrase is no longer as big but is still recognizable to many veteran internet users to older chat forums. It has been parodied frequently and differently many times with the word "base" usually being replaced with another one to fit the situation. The word "us" is rarely changed to something more specific. An example of the parody using the "This is Sparta!" fad is seen in below.
